Online Giving for Small Churches: What to Know
November 5, 2026 · 5 min read
Fewer people carry cash or checks than they used to. For many small churches and nonprofits, online giving is no longer a nice extra. It is how a growing share of regular support comes in.
Start with one simple option
You do not need every feature on day one. Pick one trusted giving tool, put a clear "Give" button on your website, and make sure it works well on a phone. You can add more later.
Understand the fees
Most giving platforms charge a small percentage plus a few cents per gift. Many let givers choose to cover the fee, and a lot of people are happy to. Compare a few providers using the size of a typical gift at your church, not just the headline rate.
Make recurring giving easy
Recurring gifts are the steadiest support you can have. Let people choose weekly or monthly giving with one tap, and remind them they can change or stop it any time. That reassurance makes people more comfortable signing up.
Give people a reason, not just a button
Share what gifts make possible. A sentence like "Your gift this month helps feed 40 families through our food pantry" connects giving to mission. Specific stories work better than general appeals.
Say thank you
Send a warm thank-you after a first gift, and an annual giving statement for tax time. Both are easy to automate and they matter to givers.
Keep it secure
Use a well-known payment provider so card details never touch your own website. Your site should show the secure padlock in the browser, which every Sanctuary site does by default.
